Default compression questions.

I'm taking a fuels class right now at the local community college and the teacher explained to me that higher compression along with no detonation and stoich fuel air mix gas mileage will be better. So I already have people saying that m90ing the motor properly will give me some more compression but will it be enough to make the extra .30c a gallon? Orwhat else could I do to get enough compression that will make it worth it? Besides porting all intake heads and exhaust
