is castrol any good?
I was told Castrol was being used on my 94 when I bought it and I think im going to continue with it.

Your RPM change could be due to the viscosity breakdown of using the cheaper oil. Cheaper Oils probably have different temperatures at which they break down versus other oils or Synthetic which is formualted to withstand heat and produce less breakdown during operation.

Part of the testament to these engines is they will take tons of abuse. You haven't done everything wrong.

Pennziol and Fram will work, they merely have been proven to be lower quality than some other oil and filters.
Bosch plugs...They work..the question is, how long?..
Dirty engine..Ever hear that an oily mess of metal can't rust? It'* easier and cleaner to work on a clean motor though.
Overheating the car....welll...it happens
Killed sensors...maybe..but you fixed them.
Ran through the ditch...and recently we had a member show us where he nearly went through a gate and brick column.
You replaced your alternator with the same part that was on their before..nothing wrong with that.
Crappy coils....GM gave those to you. Want better...pm me.
Used radiator...does it work, that'* all that matters
Rust...yeah...rust happens.
K&N drop in air filter...I would have gone back and asked for it. You know they know the difference.
I have no mods whatsoever...so do tons of members. That is the way the cars were designed to run.
I have an LE, it has an LN3...Doesn't matter...see that word..."Bonneville"
My tires suck... This can be fixed
Rims suck...do they work? so what
My interior is dirty...did I mention the sausage grinder that I ate in the car the other night? OMG...talk about a mess..
My brake system is on its last legs...yeah..but they usually work right?
i wonder what more can be wrong with the car i drive.... Lots....

oil should have nothing at all to do with RPM at a speed.

The engine is directly hooked (minus torque converter) to the transmission, the gears are hardened metal.

The only real slippage that can change at speeds that you mention would be TCC or torque converter clutch. And if this is giving you issues, it'* nearly transmission time.

Part of the testament to these engines is they will take tons of abuse. You haven't done everything wrong.

Pennziol and Fram will work, they merely have been proven to be lower quality than some other oil and filters. - ok, well at least i have not killed it
Bosch plugs...They work..the question is, how long?...yeah...no kidding, starting to miss lately
Dirty engine..Ever hear that an oily mess of metal can't rust? It'* easier and cleaner to work on a clean motor though. - true can't rust can it?
Overheating the car....welll...it happens - you have nooo idea hot hot that thing got..
Killed sensors...maybe..but you fixed them. - yeah, i guess so
Ran through the ditch...and recently we had a member show us where he nearly went through a gate and brick column. - HAHA, that really was funny
You replaced your alternator with the same part that was on their before..nothing wrong with that. - haha, true, gm screwed up
Crappy coils....GM gave those to you. Want better...pm me. - once again, gm screwed up, i would buy the coils from you, but at the current second i am broke, but not for long
Used radiator...does it work, that'* all that matters - yeah, it does work, can't say it doesn't
Rust...yeah...rust happens. - haha, no kidding...too fast
K&N drop in air filter...I would have gone back and asked for it. You know they know the difference. - yeah, too bad i don't know which shop it was that did it...i checked every one and they all siad they did not know what i was talking about...
I have no mods whatsoever...so do tons of members. That is the way the cars were designed to run. - true, true, plus you really can't do a whole lot to my gen...
I have an LE, it has an LN3...Doesn't matter...see that word..."Bonneville" - yeah thats the best part, if that car did not have the word Bonneville on it...believe me, it would not be here for long.
My tires suck... This can be fixed - sad thing is, no money and the tires only have 5,000 miles on em...
Rims suck...do they work? so what - yeah, they don't look too bad do they?
My interior is dirty...did I mention the sausage grinder that I ate in the car the other night? OMG...talk about a mess.. - wow....no..umm..yeah
My brake system is on its last legs...yeah..but they usually work right? - haha, not always, especially when i tried to do a 105-0 stop the other day
i wonder what more can be wrong with the car i drive.... Lots.... - ohh yeah with all the stuff that is already wrong, and you are telling me more can go wrong, ohh yeah, that is wayy comforting....

Thanks bill...lol

IMO, Castrol is a very good, affordable oil. As for oil filters, I always aim for a Purolator. If they're not available, I go for an AC Delco. If they're out of those, I'll run a Fram.

I figure if Fram were that bad, they'd be out of business by now. :? For the one-offs that I use them, I'm sure there'* no harm done. Minimal, if any.

There are really only 3 or 4 major manufacturers of oil filters, and here they are:

Fram

Fram Extra Guard (std)
Fram Tough Guard (different media?)
Fram X2 (Silicone ADBV, Fuzzy media)
Fram Extended Guard(same as the X2)
Mileguard (Jiffy)
Honda (although some are alleged to be made by Filtech)
Chrysler line up except for the Cummins
Penzoil
Deffense
Canadian Tire

Champion Labs

Bosch
Car and Driver
Deutsch
Mobil 1
STP
SuperTech
K&N
Valvoline filters
Mighty
Service Champ
Lee
AutoZone Value Craft
Some AC Delco
VW (some)
Warner
Luberfiner
Trust

Wix

Carquest blue
Carquest red
Napa Gold
Napa Silver (lower quality with nitrile ADBV)
Kralinator (in Canada)
ALLIANCE (Freightliner aftermarket)

Purolator (Arvin Meritor)

Purolator premium plus (nitrile adbv)
Purolator Pure One (silicone adbv, different media)
Havoline
Maxlife Valvoline (some)
Group7
Promotive
Powerflow
Quaker State (less media)
Advanced Auto Total Grip. (less media)
Pep Boys Pro Line
MotorCraft
Superflo

Denso

Toyota

Mann+Hummel

Mann
Volvo

Clarcor

Baldwin
Hastings
Amsoil
Casite

That said, I like the Wix. I'll take a stock A/C Delco, too. The Arvin Meritor'* are not far behind. I'll use a coffee filter and a rubber band before I put a Fram in my car.

That article that I mentioned earlier (and am too lazy to look for) said that FRAM made one "good" filter, when compared to the other companies....

Okay, I lied... I did search for The Oil Filter article
