I just want to confirm ( since I will be gettin new rotors and brakes ).. wats the procedure?

Hard braking..
2 30MPH to a slow crawl ( hard braking without ABS engaging )
2 70 MPH to a slow crawl

mkaake knows the procedure better than I do, but I think it involves many stops from 30 mph, taking 10 seconds to stop each time. No break between stops, just stop, accelerate, stop, accelerate, stop... etc.

I don't recall any stops from any higher speed being part of the break in procedure. I do know that if you heat them up too much while breaking them in (like if you do hard, near-abs-lockup stops), they can create a glaze on your brand new rotors (from the stuff that holds the friction material together, I guess).

I thought you shouldn't stop durin break in cause it creates some kinda spots?

take it easy (grandma it) the first 500 miles is what I have always heard.

That'* pretty much the jist of it, from what I remember him telling me. I was actually with him when he did it this last time, kinda fun.

The only part of the procedure that i'm a bit fuzzy on is how many stops to make, but I think that it is at least 10, maybe 15?

You may have a point about coming to a complete stop, but I remember him stoping completely and no problems that I know of. If you want to be safe though, just come to a nearly complete stop. It'* not really about coming to a complete stop so much as just getting things hot for the first time at the right pressure and temperature.

Be aware that the new brakes will probably smoke. It'* normal. That'* the stuff slowly "curing" in the pads.

As for the first 500 miles as suggested above... I think that as soon as you're broken in, you should be set to drive as you always do. No babying necessary.

Don't take it too seriously though. I just recently was told how to do this, so my brakes have never been done right, but I haven't really had a problem anyway. You'll be doing better than most if you are even doing half of what you should do.

EDIT: I've done a bit of online research, and apparently there are a few different schools of thought on this... Some do say to do a few hard stops. Another suggests 30/30/30: 30 stops from 30 mph, with 30 seconds between them. So... who really knows? The 30/30/30 seems best to me, if a bit excessive...

It differs if you have old pads and new rotors. My break in for the RSM'* is posted here somewhere.

If you don't replace the pads, you need to granny it for awhile, but if the pads are replaced, there'* some hard braking involved.

When I bought the RSM rotors and pads, they just said to take it easy for 500 km or so. That was it, they didn't mention anything about hard stops to break them in.

And we all know 500kms is like 5 miles..lol

Seriously.. drive nice and they'll do fine.
When I say nice I mean no swimming, no crazy stops if you don't have to. Drive as close to a normal person as ya can.
