Default Alternator kills!

How many Alternators do you KNOW (before or after you bought the car) that your car has eaten? Vote in the poll, then post what your symptoms were.

Mine had the stock alternator when I bought it with 70k miles last year. That OEM alternator seized the rear bearing 3 months ago. I just killed an Autozone 105 amp (way under powered) Alt by over-taxing it. It killed my battery. I experienced low voltages at idle and high rpm'*, and had ignition problems (misfires) due to low voltage. Fouled 5 out of 6 spark plugs.

I now run a DP 160 amp Alternator with an Optima Red Top battery.

wilwren, I am assuming I have a stock alternator. My voltmeter normally indicates a little above 14v while driving so I guess my alternator is still functioning (knock on wood). Just out of curosity what did the DP 160 amp cost just in case I ever have to replace mine? Thanks.

I can't remember for sure....I'd have to look it up, and DP'* site is kaput right now.

Try www.domesticperformance.com when it comes up.

haha IRONY...

I JUST BLEW MY FRICKIN ALTERNATOR TODAY.... on the way home from school 15 mins from my house on an interstate in traffic i hear *ding*ding*ding* above my music... well HELL wouldnt you know it my voltages is realing 10 while the cars running. I have two freshmen im taking home in the back seat and a fellow senior in the passenger and he * one that assumes my cars a rust-bucket if one thing goes wrong and so hes bitching about my car being a POS (he has a 2000 Sonata) and how hot it is (i had to turn A/C and radio off) and how bad i drive. At this point im proud of my car cause i can get home on battery alone (i had all of 12 full volts after turning everything off) so taking my chances i drop him off a good mile and a half from his car and say (ever so politely) "HIT THE ROAD DIPSH**" All of a sudden this sence of complete relief comes over me. And i drop off the two frosh as if nothing had happened. I made it home and was able to start my car twice after that (it could proly do it again). Now i get to take the 2k park avenue to school (WOHOOO sweet stereo system) Any ideas for an alternator i can get soon , cause sadly i dont think i can wait for one from DP...

Sorry... im done now.. Thanks for yalls help in advance i really do appreciate it...

Should I count the Autozone alternator that I put on that had bad bearings in it? That one lasted about 7 miles back to Autozone'* parking lot.

5 alternators total. The AC Delco I bought the car with at 82,000 was the original one. The next AC Delco went 50,000.

Alternator No. 3 went 7 miles, No. 4 went about 6,000 before I took it off because it wasn't charging enough at idle. Both of these were Autozone alternators. I put another AC Delco on while No. 4 sits in my trunk as a backup.

Always have a spare alternator in the trunk.
