Default 92 Bonneville SE... 210000 miles....

Hi everybody!

I'm new here, and I really don't know a whole lot about Bonnevilles. From what I hear, they have strong, reliable, long lasting engines, and are generally great all around cars. My brother owns a 1992 SE, and it has about 210000. The whole car is in very good shape considering it'* age, and I'm considering buying it, but it has LOTS of miles on it. I'm not sure if it'* a good idea, I don't want to buy it and have the engine go 'caput' on me before I have a chance to enjoy it. It feels like it still runs great, but I would like to know if it'* lifespan is nearing it'* end...

I would get it inspected by a good mechanic, checking for any signs of wear and tear. I had a friend with a Series I engine blow a rod cause it wasn't taken care of well, and it had around those miles. If everything turns out good though, I'd say take it. These engines last a very long time.

210k? Is that metric or imperial? I'm having trouble extracting your location from you IP.

Oops.

Ok, I'd check to see if it'* the original transmission. If not, how long ago was it replaced? The motor will go to 300k, the trans is harder to predict.

Have Some compression checks done for sure. Old gaskets, and the possibility of an EGR-less engine going thru items like valves or gaskets is much higher.

Hopefully it'* got an EGR.

Thanks for the replies everybody! I'm going to test drive it myself tomorrow, and see how it runs with myself behind the wheel. Any ideas on what the car is worth? I've found the bluebook value to be around $1300, but I found the same exact car on autotrader.com with 196000 miles selling for $4000... I'm thinking I'll just trade my Blazer for it, it'* worth $2300 bluebook.

Wait a minute. This is your Brother that'* selling you this car, right? I would think that he would give a family member a pretty decent price break #1 and #2 would make pretty sure that the car you may be getting has no known problems(or at least give you a free tank of gas).

Well, my brother recently bought it (very recently, just a few weeks ago) from a good friend of his who just had no use for it anymore (since he owns far too many cars...) I want to talk to him about it as well. It sort of works like this... he traded his friend his older Blazer for the Bonneville becuase he needed a truck to pull his camper. My brother has owned it now for a few weeks and gave it to his wife who really loves it. But both my brother and his wife are are into 4x4 trucks and go offroad alot. Now I'm looking for a car, becuase I'm in college and need something that get more than 10 miles to the gallon, and would like something with a little speed. So my brothers wife is offering the Bonny in trade for my Blazer.

So now I determine whether its a worth while trade or not... I don't want to believe my brother is ripping me off, and I doubt he is. He'* said nothing but good things about the Bonny and I'm really interested in it.

that many miles on a 92 SE, defintally get it checked out them EGR-less motors tend to burn out valves!
