It'* possible someone topped off the radiator with non DEX. This will cause a dark black sludge. A lighter browner sludge is air in the system with old coolant.

That'* correct. In this picture I have the plug removed. It will be in roughly the same spot in the rear of the block.

The holes for the water passages are only about 1/4" dia, and many were clogged up. Some still are in the above photo

No problem! Also, do you have a picture of the lower intake manifold gaskets? Those are common failures on the older 60*V6'* (as xtremerevolution mentioned) but I'm pretty sure that your motor came with the updated gaskets.
