the 3800 isn't alone!
I was looking around my engine bay and made a discovery that was chilling. The 3800 is not alone.
My engine with the engine cover on:
and this is what I saw after taking the cover off:
{brace yourself.. what you see may disturb you!}
Yes, the 3.5 DOHC also uses a plastic intake manifold.
I just hope they don't have the failures to the extent that the 3800 does. Does anybody know anything about this happening?

It'* a different engine so hopefully it doesn't have the same problem as the L36 upper intake. :? The 4.0 that'* in the Aurora also has a plastic upper intake, and I doubt that has any intake problems. Hopefully for your case it'* only the 3800 that has the problem.

The EGR on the 3800 manifold is what really causes the problem. Those composite manifolds are very strong. There are composite manifolds made for the LS6 Vette engine, which puts out over 400HP, and they last a long time.

It seems that only the L36s have the issue. The L27s never had the issue either. If anything, be concerned about the upper and lower gaskets. Those are too easily overlooked, and the root cause to a lot of issues as the engine accumulates miles.

Yeah the Plastic inatkes have been around for quite some time... One of the reasons they use it is that it keeps the incoming air cooler as opposed to alluminum which transfers heat quickly... It also reduces the weight of the cars and truck when they do that... Every little bit helps...
So far the only thing I have heard of on all of the other plastic intake is the lower intake gaskets failing.... The 3808 II L36 seems to be the one with the issues...
Fantastic, those runners are good for high end power, and looks like it was set up to perserve some low end too... I have yet to hear of any issues with the 4.6 northstar intake and the 3.5 is a spinoff of it...

I'm sure someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but the biggest issues I've heard about those engines are the rear main seals leaking, and oil consumption. Again, this is just hear-say, can anyone else substantiate? I've also heard of a couple failed head gaskets, but that doesn't sound to be the "norm".

Composite not plastic... hit yours on top, it'* not exactly soft.
The new LS7 (427CID) for the z06 has a composite intake. It'* Handbuilt, and 500 Pony packing.
Also has TItanium rods, forged crank, a race derived aluminum block, dry sump oiling system,fully CNC'd heads, and all from 16 valves.
Good enough to get to 60 close to 3.5 seconds, good enough for me
