I saw 2 cars which the sellers are willing to trade me these cars for my Z28,
the starter went out on it and my fiance and I are in need of a running gas saver for now. I've seen quite a few 4 cyl GM cars, these 2 being just a few
The sellers are looking for a fun project car, so that explains it.



The 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier LS has 94,000 miles on it, 2.2L OHV, 4-Speed Auto, 4-Door.
Runs/Drives Great, No noises or Leaks, New Tires, Clean. $2,170
(My mom used to own one of these! 2.2L'* are Bulletproof )

The 2001 Pontiac Grand Am has 97,200 miles on it, 2.4L Twin-Cam, 4-Speed Auto, 4-Door, New Tires, Also Runs and Drives Great, No noises or Leaks, Clean. $2,150.

Both are reasonably comfortable inside (The Cavalier is an LS),
But, We aren't having any children ever, so comfort is not the big issue.

Which one will have less problems in the long run? Better on Gas?
Easier/Cheaper to service and own? And other things?

avoid the grand am. get the cavalier.

those 2.4L motors had much more design problems than the 2.2L.
the 2.2L had very few problems and were mostly in 1995,
i think GM corrected in 1996. the 2.2L remained essentially the same since 1982, except for different displacements. Solid Iron block Pushrod motor,
simple and easy to work on.

I bought my '97 cavalier, and I made sure it was a 2.2L before I purchased it.
i would have run away if it were a 2.4L.

I would also select the cavalier- the Grand Ams need a lot of money and attention to keep running.

Did that year 2.4 have the timing belt or chain. If its the belt i would definitely not go for that. I know the 2.4 water pumps are kinda of a pain to change too.
