Default 1989 sse elec climate control

:? I have a 1989 sse 231,000 miles...today i opened the garage door and smelled a terrible smell of circuit board buring and my blower motor was running..."the key was not in the car"???? anyway after looking around i found it was the dash control "electronic climate control" inside of it looked like someone took a torch to it.... very very badly burnt..... Im glad its encased in metal or the entire car could of lite on fire.....
this is very strange because i very rarly drive the car anymore... it had not been drove in about two weeks... @#$%@#
Anyway this question is for the experts ...... if i just replace the electronic climate control unit should i be safe or could another unit that controls this one be bad also..... I would like opinions before i just replace the unit.......
thanks...

Whoa, that'* strange. There is an HVAC programmer under the dashboard that controls the air direction, heat input, and I believe the fan as well. The control head is just a display that tells you what is going on along with the control buttons.

I'm wondering how that malfunction happened.
