On another site we have a search option to search for posts made within the last 24 hours. This is helpful for those of us who check the new messages, but then have to close the browser for whatever reason and when we come back the new posts are gone.

That happens to me all the time and I miss stuff. I think that is a great idea!

I like the idea also

My computer has locked up on my a few times before right after I log in and I lost all the new posts. Also happens when I am logged in and ( I think ) the server goes down for maintenance / whatever reason, and it won't let me back on and logs me out.

I also think that this is a great idea.

That is in the top right of the main page. That list will reset if you close your browser or clear your cookies with the brower still open.
