Great to see the kind of growth that we have been having. What do you(s) think about creating a section specifically for new members.

Giving the newbies a chance to properly introduce themselves, discuss minor issues that bring them to BC in the first place etc. I'm finding that a lot of new members are making an attempt to get a point across and are being less then sucessful. Tone in our threads is becoming a real problem when current members are only trying to help out new members.

I've been seeing new members getting off on the wrong foot by blindly posting. If we create a new section, it can be easier for Bonnevilleclub veterans to guide the new members to the correct subject and/or thread.

Will this work or what?

Good idea dude, not sure how many "newbies" will actually use it....but you never know.

I suppose its like anything, if something is available to use, maybe they will :wink:

Maybe it wasn't a suggestion, maybe it was just a thought.

An "Introduction" section may work though. That way at least we all find out who they are & where they come from. We might even find out what brought them here too. :wink:

As a "newbie" I understand the point made by "98BonnieSE89". I have observed questions being asked repeatedly and subjects re-hashed. I'm sure it is frustrating for some veteran members. Maybe some new members are unaware that the tech-archive can answer many of the commonly asked questions. I observed (eavesdropped) on this site for almost a month before joining, to learn & get a feel for the interaction of the members. No one likes being misinterpreted or being at odds, but what brought me here was the "interaction" with real people who share my interests. Anyone can research and find facts buried in text, but that is neither fulfilling nor enjoyable learning!

I think something that would help would be to promote and expand the technical section. Many of the rehashed questions are dealt with there, like the MAF Screen and 180 TStat. If it was promoted more, and new members were encouraged to read it before posting, that would save duplicate posts of the same thing every week.
Some people are too lazy to do a search before posting a simple question.

Maybe we could gently encourage and direct new posters of rehashed questions to the technical page or to do a search.

Or how about the moderaters getting a little more aggressive about locking topics that are constant repeats, along with a final post on them that says to do a search or look in the technical section.

Not a bad idea.. and have a sticky in the "Introduction" "Newbie" section that has a list of common concerns that can direct them to check out tech info.. since most people would probably post their first as a newbie to show themselves.. and having a stickie that makes them go "Hey.. common engine concern and so on? Let see here first before I post away" ( so yes I agree with briminder and all the members posting about this topic )

When I owned an old 5 Series Bimmer, the bulletin board I hung around was always limited for bandwidth space, so the Moderater was pretty tough on us not duplicating posts and such. He would delete duplicate posts even. He was always nagging about doing a search before posting a question that had already been answered, and thus wasting space.

It was like having your mom around.

I didn't imply deleted posts, but if we create a section as an introduction for new(er) members, then it can be avoided before it begins.

Maybe the nuances of an introduction section work better in theory then in real life, but I hope you understand my point in the first place. :wink:
