Default Upper Barring for Super

:( Well, lately I have had a rattling under my hood, so I have had it checked out. It is my upper barring in the supercharger, and there is no kit to rebuild it. My choice now is to buy a whole new supercharger or sell it basically. I just had my whole brake system repalced too, so this is really crappy news. I drive a Bonnie SSEi 1992. If anyone knows how I can fix this without having to replace the whole super, please fill me in! Or if you know how I can get ahold of an upper barring for the super. I would be very happy. E-mail me or contact me via AOL IM. ( I usually don't come in here too often, but I will get e-mails.)

Yes ...Fluff...there are options for you...Re-building seems to be possible...Are you sure it'* a bearing....sounds like maybe just the coupler...Does it rattle at idle..or at throttling up??

Here I come to save the day! (only because I beat fuddyduddy in here).

You have more than a few options. If (as mentioned already) your rattle is at idle only, it'* just a simple coupler change. We can talk you through it. Same thing for the bearing, but it'* probably the coupler. If you don't feel up to that, it'* almost certainly no more than a new nosedrive. The rest of the super is probably ok. You're talking half the cost at the most......playing the odds.

More details requested: Noise....at idle, or all rpms? How much boost do you get at WOT off the line, in gear (under load)???

If it'* what we suspect, we'll talk you through it and save you a cool grand.

The rattling noise stops as soon as I start to accelerate. So it'* only when I am idling.
I am not sure what all nose cones and couplers are. I am not very mechanically inclined, so if you could just kinda talk to me like you would to a 2 year old I guess! Just so I can understand everything, and I do appreciate all the responces! So if you could just talk me through what you are talking about, it would be very much appreciated!!

Thank you!!!
Stefanie

Sounds like the coupler. You need to get with someone who knows something about superchargers. I would slip the belt off and rotate the pulley back and forth to see if there is any play. That would signal that the coupler is bad.

If it is a bad coupler, that does not mean you need to replace the entire supercharger. You have a few options. You could change out the head unit or take the head unit apart and put in a new coupler. I talked to the Pontiac dealer a month ago and they said that they will now change out the head unit instead of replace the whole supercharger.

That'* confirmed here, too, Fud. My local dealer sez the same. They're getting magnusson rebuilt nosedrives at an EXCELLENT price now. Even after the markup, it'* a pretty good price from the dealer.

To the owner of our newest problem......look here:

Apologies for the hokey formatting, but we were having software problems at the time. This really isn't a big deal. I have the Magnusson instructions if you'd like....just email me and I'll send them out to you to look over.

Alrighty, so now I will know what to say when I take it in. Does anyone know about how much this should cost? Just because I am female and mechanics like to try to take us sometimes.

Not sure what a mechanic would charge ya...but the part itself is only 35-40 bux..and then you would need some gaskets and such...Mechanic will probably charge 35-60 an hour...and at bout 4-6 hrs or so....You should find a "backyard" mechanic for this...Will probably do it for the BEER

I think I remember the dealer charging $400 + labor for the head unit. Not the most reasonable way to do it, but it may be difficult for you to find someone to take apart the head unit and replace the parts inside.

Exactly. You won't get a mechanic to crack the case. They'll do the nosedrive minimum. Parts should run $50 for consumeables.....plus the nosedrive, or internal parts if you're lucky to find a mechanic to do it that way.
