Is it nessesary to run premium gas in a stock SSEI? :? Im not racing or anything, just standard city and highway driving.

if you dont, you might get a pinging sound from the engine, which i think is rod knock? a gearhead will chime in. It isnt great to run them on mid or low grade, cuz it will kill engine i think.

This has been discussed before......what it boils down to is that knock is bad. BAD. Especially over time.

91 octane MINIMUM. Some of us have had to boost that up as we mod.

Opinions may vary, but it specifically says to run premium fuel only. And knock can destroy and engine.

When I get my heads decked [10:1 Compression Ratio], I think I may just run 89 octane and let the ECU curve the timing. That'* what will most likely happen, right guys? The ECU will compensate for the knock.. right?

If you are running high compression or boost, spend the extra 10 or 15 cents a gallon and get a higher octane, just for cheap insurance down the road.

On newer models they will compensate, but that doesn't guarantee that you'll be knock free under all conditions.

But you will get more power and better milage from that power, if you run premium, so i wouldn't worry about the cost of gas.

Hmm... I didn't think about that. Does retarding timing decrease fuel economy?

ive found that premium gas is cheapest at krogers(its dillons here).. with a plus card i get 6¢ off the price listed... sams comes in second i get 2¢ off the price listed there

i got my 94 ssei about 2 months ago, and have been running regular ever since. i think it'* like 87 octane maybe. i haven't noticed any problems or pinging/knocking. i should be using higher octane? like the manual or whatever says to use high octane?
