Is it possible to install a turbo on an 82' 4.1L V6? If so where could I obtain one?

Granted GM has done some cloak and dagger engine things in the 80'*. I never heard of the 4.1L/252 cu.in. in a Bonneville before. Are you sure? It was used in the bigger Buicks and the Olds Toronado in your year range. Never seen one turbo'd. A good place for info would be HMT - Homemade Turbo - Home of the real home made turbo setups!

Venom is correct. Here are the engines for the 1982 Bonneville:
3.8 L (231 cu in) Buick V6
5 L (305 cu in) Chevrolet V8
5.7 L (350 cu in) Oldsmoblile diesel V8

Not saying you guys are wrong, but The Haynes Manual an the engine stamp on my Bonneville is 4.1L. From what I gathered 1978 - 1983 had option of getting 4.1L. 18% of all Bonneville'* made in 82' had 4.1L with THM 400 trans, an Rochester 4MC Carb. I'm not sure what ya'll think about autozone either, but if you put in my year model it brings up 3.8L, 4.1L, 5.8L. If I'm unable to do a turbo then what would my other options be. Looking to improve gas.

What gas mileage are you getting? When did you last change your plugs, wires and air filter? Good plugs, wires and air filter along with proper inflation pressure in your tires are all basic ways to optimize gas mileage.

Well, for starters ya'll are correct it is a 3.8L, I appoligize, umm... I do need to put new plugs, wires, an filter in planned that next week. I'm also wonderin will a Tornado really help?

If the 8th digit in your VIN is a 4, your car started life with a 4.1.

The engine options I have per Alldata are 3.8L 2b, 4.1L 4b, or a 5.7L Diesel.
You can confirm the engine that came with your car per the 8th digit of the vin. See above. Or look on the deck lid for the RPO tag. It should have a LD4. As far as swapping a Turbo if you could get a 3.8 turbo engine you could possibly swap components. I might just be easier to swap in a small bock chevy due to cost and availabilty of parts. Do you have a 400 trans in this car?

if your trying to get any decent mileage out of a 1982 your gonna have to get rid of it and buy a newer car with less cylinders lol. the EPA says that your vehicle will be getting around 17city and 22 hwy, my guess is that your probably getting about 10-12 city and 20 hwy. These are numbers that you are going to have to live with, it comes with having an 80'* big body sedan. I have a 1986 Lincoln town car that gets 10 city and around 20 hwy and these numbers are a consequence of having a huge car.

You can install a turbo on your 3.8 with relative ease using factory GM parts! Buick built a 231 turbo from '78-'83 that was a draw-thru carburetor design. Not the greatest for max power, but very easy and efficient. Your '82 is a G-body and the same chassis as the Buick, so all the parts will be a direct fit. Or you can find someone to build a custom kit that will work even better. I have alot of factory parts for that turbo engine as they were the same as the Pontiac 301 turbo (with a few minor differences). I am currently working on a twin-drawthru-turbo for my tow vehicle using two complete 301 turbos. Look on Ebay for the parts you need or go custom, depends on how much you have budgeted.
