Default Will a VATS problem still crank over an engine?

Hey All,
Anyone know if a VATS problem will not allow power to the starter? I will get all lights inside the car (no SECURITY light on my dash... maybe burnt bulb?) If is jump the solenoid it will start. It will not start with the key. I am not sure if it has to do with the same thing but my guages are all screwy too. Oil pressure will become pegged, temp guage will zero, boost guage will barely move under full throttle, and fuel guage will go to empty and the fuel light will trigger. Sometimes it comes back, sometimes not. New problem, grr. Thanks for the help!!

The 'normal' Vats problem will disable the starter & fuel injectors.
Which wire are you jumping on the solenoid?

I am just doing the screwdriver across the main post and the purple solenoid to get it to start with the ignition in the "on" position.

Your description is not VATs. Vats would not allow fuel supply through the injectors. This is something different.

First thoughts are check/clean your battery cables and the ground buss at the driverside front door.

Have you ever found your carpet wet in the car?

I have cleaned the ground busses, disassembled the dash and replaced the SECURITY light. This problem is intermettent. When I try and start it several times in a row, it will NOT start after about the 3rd attempt. Sometimes I can wait a bit and it will start. Security light is fine, I bypassed the system with a 670ohm resistor. In the diagram, what is the starter enable relay, and is that a possibility?

I've never seen or heard of a start enable relay problem in these vehicles so I'm gonna go with the odds and say that'* not the problem either. I hope it'* not cause if it were, the dash would have to be removed to replace.

Have you tried starting it in neutral? There is an adjustment on the gear selection linkage which, if not properly adjusted, could inhibit starting.

Grab a test light, a helper and a print out of the above diagram. First, test the yellow wire under the dash to check the ignition switch. Next, test the yellow wire at the trans connector. This will test the start enable relay. Then test the purple wire at the trans connector. This will test the trans switch.

Since this is an intermittent problem, you will need to do the testing when the problem is present.
