Well.......funny you should ask......I think it started with, "Hey were is all that smoke coming from?" And then Oh crap the car is on fire. The cigarette lighter shorted out and decided it would catch on fire and melt then entire dash wiring harness all the way to the end. And the way to get to it? Dashectomy. Luckily I got to it fast enough to get the fire put out. The flames were pretty big. This was a very unexpected event and now I am without a car that I absolutely need. I have to find the wiring harness to replace the whole thing and I hope Ed Morad has one. I have no idea how I am going to pay for this because I just paid tuition for $6,500 for my last quarter of school and I am now broke. I have to have a car but this is going to cost me. Why is it that everything that goes wrong with this car cost me money?

I think that is an understatement. I hope it all goes back together.

SOME ONE STOLE YOUR DASH !!!!!

ROFL
Naw, wow that sucks. Hope it goes well for ya :D

Gumball 04-08-2007 09:51 AM

its a good thing you were with the car when you seen the smoke

brianj 04-08-2007 10:04 AM

Why didn't the fuse blow and protect the circuit from fire? Do you use your lighter in the car for anything? How did you put out the fire? Were you driving at the time or parked?

That view of the dash has me looking real hard as I have a very annoying rattle in the top near the air vents on the pass side, but from that series of pics I can't determine what it may be. Perhaps you can suggest something since you were there taking that all apart.

Hope she gets all back together for you and dosen't rattle or clang! Good luck!

bandit 04-08-2007 10:09 AM

thats what i was thinking but all it takes is a Wire to be a little smaller then the fuse and then poof it will over heat in a short and start smoking

Or the short may have occured before the fuse.

1993 SLE 04-08-2007 11:43 AM

wow that is interesting

are you gonna do a HUD now???

You could alway...

"Hey Bill?"

I hope it works out for you.

There are many potential rattles in the dash. I think I found all of mine. Several loose screws, money that someone had shoved into the air vents, loose clips, etc. There are a lot of places I went "Hey there's that rattle I've been hearing. Perfect time to do a HUD if I could find one. Here are some more aftermath photos of the damage, Just about every wire in the entire path was melted and some I can't even pull apart.

So am I because I don't have the money to do it. I am flat broke and this is my only car to get around. I don't know what I am going to do about getting to work and all that.

jshelton54 04-08-2007 07:46 PM

Bad news, Ed doesn't have any of those harnesses laying around. Oh crap!

1995BvSSE 04-08-2007 08:30 PM

Wow. Sorry about your luck. New twist to the white curse.

jshelton54 04-08-2007 09:02 PM

Anyone by chance able to tell me the GM part number for the dash harness?

95SLE 04-08-2007 09:13 PM

Any chance of rebuilding the stock harness? Are the connectors in good shape or did they melt as well?

JenniElizabeth 04-08-2007 09:58 PM

happen

wiht mine and reading all here, it seems as though most problems with bonnies
cost alot of money. GMs joke on us bonnie lovers

BillBoost37 04-08-2007 10:30 PM

Keep your chin up...

Something will come up or you could rebuild that one. Heat shrink, some wire and a good manual is all you need. If you need some diagrams etc..holler..I think I've got it all online.

Plugs are good. It would be possible, but anything is pretty much possible. I just don't have the time or wire available or the patients to sit there with it for hours at a time. So if worse comes to worse I will have to end up doing that. But I don't want to. It is pretty bad. Just keeps getting worse the more I dig into it.

BillBoost37 04-09-2007 06:50 AM

Buck up camper..it's repairable. Heck.. if you sent it to me and it's only 10-50 wires..I could have it done in one night and back across the country. The work is easy.. just takes time.

jshelton54 04-09-2007 09:47 AM

Thanks, if worst comes to worst I will send it to you. It is a lot of wires and I just don't have them here or the time to do it. I am getting a qoute on a brand new one and have a lead on a used one. I don't know what I am going to do yet. I will let you know.

Gumball 04-09-2007 09:49 AM

since this may be a repair in the works I'm going to move this to Everything Electrical & Electronic section.
good luck Jared

BillBoost37 04-09-2007 10:07 AM

While you have it and everything else apart...have you been able to locate why the cig lighter shorted?

jshelton54 04-09-2007 01:46 PM

Freak accident I think. So that thing new is $1,000. I'm thinking that isn't an option at all.

BillBoost37 04-09-2007 01:57 PM

Sooo when you sending the old one ?

Archon 04-09-2007 02:18 PM

Checking on information for that harness, I found this TSB regarding harnesses. The technician is expected to repair, rather than replace. It is an extended waiting period to get one. This is just part of the TSB.

Important: A part restriction has been implemented on all Body and I/P harnesses and is being administered by the PQC. If a body or I/P harness replacement is required, it can take 12-28 weeks for a harness to be built and delivered to a dealer. The dealer technician is expected to repair any harness damage as the first and best choice before replacing a harness.

In an effort to standardize repair practices, General Motors is requiring that all wiring harnesses be repaired instead of replaced. If there is a question concerning which connector and/or terminal you are working on, refer to the information in the appropriate Connector End Views in SI. The Instruction Manual J 38125-620, which is sent with each new update of the J 38125 Terminal Repair Kit, also has terminal crimping and terminal remove information.
Also, unless you know what caused the problem, track down the cause or you could likely end up with the same problem. GM does not oversize the wires, but they don't undersize them, either. That fuse should have gone before that wiring caught fire.

jshelton54 04-11-2007 05:42 PM

Well I sat down with it and just repaired it. I was sick of the runarounds I was getting with the junk yards not knowing what I was looking for and verifying it was the same one before I had it overnighted. I haven't gotten it back together yet so I don't know if everything works or not yet. It was a mess trying to figure out which wire when where especially when they have the same color in the loom a couple of times. Cross your your fingers.

GXP_Vince 04-11-2007 05:58 PM

Dont worry all will be fine i'm sure

jshelton54 04-12-2007 12:35 AM

Car back together, no crank when I turn the key. Now what? And the track contol light it on all the time even with key off, and no doom lights with door open, but will turn on with the switch. Crappy!
