Once a vats module is blank it can take on a new value right? Does anyone know if there is a way to do that? Mechanic says there are 6 different resistor values for that year... thus 6 different modules and he is having a hard time finding the right one.

there are 15 different values for VATS.....not 6

Actually there should be a total of 16 values I believe.

Might be a way to program the system with a Tech2 which is usually a dealer only. However I am unaware that was well.

He should be able to read the key for the resistor value by touching the leads of him ohm meter to etiher side of the pellet in the key.

He said on a 93 apparently there are only 6. Does anyone know of the relearn sequence? Can that be used for this pk2 system?

• 7500 ohms (acceptable range 7200-7820)
• 9530 ohms (acceptable range 9149-9931)
• 11800 ohms (acceptable range 11328-12292)

I've never heard of any relearn function for the VATS system. If a key needs to be replaced, the correct key needs to be obtained for the VATS module, you can not program the module to the new key. If the module needs to be replaced, new keys matching the new module need to be used.

PK2???? GM uses a transponder style antitheft system in later years in most vehicles. This system is designated by PK3 engraved in the key just below the rubber part of the key. I've never heard of the term PK2 in reference to GM vehicles.

Yeah I agree with you on that one, mechanic is clueless... and he is wasting my time and his. I just don't know what to do now. I could take it somewhere else but I have to get it towed there and I am not sure how to deal with this guy thats been working on it for over a week.

D you guys know if there was a way for him to wire the ignition stuff wrong and short out the module?

Forget about him.
Hotwire the starter and go somwhere else or do it yourself.
Do you need Vats? If not I found the cure!!!

If he'* had it for a week and hasn't fixed it yet, get it the hell out of there and tell him thanks for trying. Tell him you want him to pay for the tow to another mechanic cause you're still carless after a week and need your ride back. I reread the thread and there'* no listing of symptoms. Through the conetext I gather it doesn't start but there'* other information that can be helpful. For instance, do you have BOTH a no crank and no fuel pump situation? I'd also like to know what your security light is doing.
