Gotta disagree. with the car sitting for 3 months, water could pile up inside the alternator, this causes rust and eventually causes the bearings to take a sh**.


A splash in the alternator while its moving will not harm it, but having water pool up inside it will cause loads of problems i'd think.

Ok, I checked it this morning, yeah, that pulley on the alternator ain't going ANYWHERE. Time for a new alternator, again....

I took some pics, but now I can't find my camera USB connector :x :?: :!: The engine bay still reaks of burnt serpentine belt :roll: :lol:

Bill, I'm going to start looking into that magnetice covers for those vents :lol:

Alternators won't 'pool' water. They're designed to get wet. Rain isn't going to cause any more problems than 100% humidity on the normal winter days we have in the NW.

My alternator was exposed in the Zilla all last winter with no issues, and John and I only live 4 hours apart. Car was frozen solid on more than one occasion.

I suspect the inferior 92-93 alternator strikes again. I suggest getting a 140 amp alternator from a 94/95 to replace it with.

That's what I am thinking. How much fabrication will I have to do to make it work?

None.

Bolts right up. My 160 custom alternator was made from a 95 140. And bolted right up on the Zilla.

You MAY have to put a larger terminal end on the charge cable to the battery if the post on the new alt is larger than the stocker.

Sounds good. So I'll just ask NAPA for a 94-95 SSEi Alternator then, right?

Would the larger terminal just for safety reasons?

larger terminal? you can run a larger power wire to the battery, this is part of the "big 3" from the car stereo world.


I still think the excessive water, build up in the alternator accelerated the failure, however it seems these alternators only like to last a few months to a couple years max. I've had my share of burnt up 105s, I still have a 105 on my car but got the lifetime warranty, so if it craps out I can get another for cheaper.


140 will be superior in just about everyway if you can afford it, you just cant use the "core" from your car.

Ok, NAPA can't even order it in :? Schucks can get me a BOSCH (BOSCH = Bad) one for $216, and that includes the core charge :evil: So, I'm going to have a buddy (Matt SN: 2000CadillacSTS) price one from the dealership at cost. If that is still steep, then I'm going to go custom. Matt also knows of place that does custom work and can put any amperage (SP?).

How long has the car sat? Maybe this is a combination of the vents and not running it. Mine gets wet all the time, but during that period of exposure, it was driven at least every other day.

Try a wrecker, John.

About 3 months, if not longer. I think it's the combination as well.

I might putts my way up to a wrecker. Usually there isn't much, I'd be lucky if there was anything there Bonneville wise.
