What caused it to overheat in the first place is what gets me. Going on a week with the new one, and no problems yet, knock on wood

I'm hoping for you that it was only a bad switch. Did you double check the wires and look at the connections in the connector as well for any corrosion.
When I put mine back in I made the following observations because I was very worried about a meltdown. In fact I felt very lucky to have pulled it apart when I did. The metal plate that comes out of the plastic and hangs out a bit gets very hot naturally. Nothing else should get hot. The connector especially should be cold.
