Default Flashing Instrument Cluster

I have check the and cleaned the instrument cluster. I checked and cleaned the ground wires in the car. The alternator was check and checked out fine. Does anyone have any other suggestions on what could be wrong? The bell also goes off and the gauges reset at times as well.

did you check your fuses, sometimes they can corrode just like top post battery terminals, mine did this as well, it was all corrosion.

Post would be better off in Everything Electrical Forum...IMO.

Sometimes that can mean bad connections at the battery, too. Describe the flashing more in detail.

The driver'* information area and the compass will both flash on and off. Sometimes it will do this rapidly and sometimes it will just go out and stay out for awhile and then all of the sudden come back on. The gauges sometimes also do not work when this happens although not all the time. The voltage gauge does a lot of fluctuating at times. The speedometer and tach are not affected at all.

what year/ trim model are we talking about here? Because if its an 87-91, that'* the same problem I had with my DIC and Compass, We are still trying to pinpoint the issue at hand. But I am leaning towards there being an issue with the compass, causing the DIC and Compass to shut off. Basically it is a deep electrical failure. If its a newer bonne, I can't help ya there.

My experience:

93 SSEi. Bought with intermittent compass, DIC, temp, boost and oil pressure gauges. Fiddled with connections for days. Remove/reinstall cluster at least a dozen times.

Bought another used from the junk yard (reman unit). Compass and DIC stable now, boost gauge OK for the most part, temp gauge still wonky and oil gauge is pegged at max (beyond scale) all the time.

I sympathize. I suspect the problem was _in_ the cluster, in one (or more) of the many ribbon connections between the various circuit boards. A full disassembly and reassembly might do the trick.

I had the same problem. I tried all the connections to no avail. I finally exchanged it for a rebuilt unit at a company that specializes in instrument clusters. Before they sent me the new one they loaded it up with the correct odometer reading. I think it cost about $200 or so.

I also replaced the clear bezel at the same time.

Haven't had a problem since.

If you want I can do some research and see if I can find out where I got it.
