Default Drive slowly in small circles - compass woes

01 SLE compass demands recalibration a couple of times a day. Just started this last week. Haven't changed anything -no speakers or amps, nothing in trunk, driving where I have always driven - haven't moved. Seems to calibrate ok, but it won't stay calibrated. This evening I pulled the connector off and cleaned it, but it looked ok so I'm looking for any more suggestions. Is there a way to check the transducer?
How much would a new one cost? What about finding one in a junkyard? Are they one size fitzalls? Or is there a way to stop the incessent dinging when it needs recalibrated? Could I just leave it unplugged. I find compasses useless. Thanks in advance for responses.

I unplugged mine. My stereo threw it off. I tried to recalibrate it with the stereo in place, and it went haywire, acting like yours.

Try disconnecting then see how the DIC responds. It seems as if your compass module is probably getting ready to give it up if it hasn't already.
