Default Blower motor cutting out

For the past two days, the blower motor on my 98 SE is only working when it wants to. It will work fine about an hour, and then when I turn the car off and then get back in and start it, no blower motor. After 10,15,20 minutes into driving, it will start working. Sounds like a short, but where should I check?

Thanks

Try hitting the blower motor when it doesn't work. It'* on the firewall behind the middle of the motor. It may not be making contact after years of wear.

If you have an automatic control AC unit the blower control module that is close to the motor on top of the air handler housing (under the relay center) may not be working right. It'* accessible by removing a couple of screws holding the relay center and moving it up to gain access to the blower control module.

The blower contol modules often fail with erratic fan speed changes, strange operation, no operation, and staying on after the car is off and key removed--which drains the battery. IF you have the regular system without the auto control, you have a resistor set instead of the blower control module.

If the motor starts when vibrated, it most likely is the blower motor. You can also check by directly connecting the motor to the battery through a fused line and providing a ground. The fact it comes on after driving and bouncing would make me check blower motor first.

Well, thats just it. It always works first thing in the morning when cold. After driving for a while and I shut the car off and go to restart it, it isn't working. It will come back on randomly, not necessarily hitting a bump. I can be sitting in a parking lot and it will just come back on. It'* almost as if it'* shutting down because it'* too hot????

Did the blower work when you wired directly from the battery positive through a fuse?

Oh sorry i'm not the original poster.
Just thanking you for that post as it described what mine was doing.
I did get one (blower control module) from a junk yard today and it starts and stops, speeds up and slows down lol.
Had to bite the bullet and spend the $200+ to get it from the dealer. Going to be here tomorrow.

Anyways thanks for that post, helped me alot.

It would be helpful if someone traced this problem down.
My sister-in-law’* 98 has same symptoms Auroralover described. Problem occurs randomly and it always behaves itself whenever someone tries to track it down.
I looked at it once - unplugged connector at fan and plugged it back in. It started working fine and I couldn’t get it to repeat the problem.

I've had this same problem on other cars and it was always the blower motor... doesn't mean it is with this car, but usually GM blower motors are pretty cheap (about $43 at Autopartsgiant.com--maybe less at a discount auto parts store like Autozone or O'Reilly). If you can get the motor without the squirrel cage they'll charge you less too. Generally you can re-use your old squirell cage unless it'* broken. AutoPartsGiant also has the control module for just over $100, which is half of what the dealer charges...

The control module from the dealer solved my problem. Been working fine since installation..
Easy to install too.

Default blower motor

Mine cuts out when it'* cold and you really need it. I just touch the power plug on the blower and it comes right back on. Must be to loose or worn out. I tried cleaning it to no avail. One of these days I'll take things apart to have a closer look.
Cheers.
