I think it might be a bad battery.. but

What happens if the battery for whatever reason couldn't vent properly? Would it show symptoms like that since the pressure will build up internally?

Sorry it took me so long to get back. The car was at the dealer and they changed the
battery . As of last wednesday it hasn`t leaked yet. They say they checked everything ,
according to the Master technicien, all o.k . They told me that it must have been a bad battery . One bad one I understand but this was the third one that was leaking and this was happening only when the car was parked for the night. Now everything dims down when I stop at a traffic light.

IT dims down? Sounds like an alternator not charging enough or on it'* last leg.. blown phase??

Between the excessive alternator and battery replacement and "boiling" you mentioned I'd put my money on a short somewhere. Anyone agree?

Yes, something is definitely faulted in that electrical system.

Is the drain still occurring? Try pulling your cigar lighter(*) for a day or two; possibly one of them is sticking in the socket.

Swapping in a new (presuambly fully-charged) battery might hide your drain symptoms for a day or so, but not indefinitely, especially if you're now seeing your lights dimming at stoplights.

Did anyone ever figure this headache out?????
My 95 SSE is doing the exact same thing! Boiling, bulging batteries ( on #3 now). I'll save a lot of everyones time by saying that I have done or replaced everything.

Have your alternator tested. Advance Auto and Autozone are two of the parts places I know of with a free test. They should be able to tell if your alternator'* internal regulator is failing.

could be a short somewhere, maybe the insulation on the pos bat cable is wearing down somewhere and grounding out, that would cause some problems.

Yeah, flames shooting out from under the hood, that kind of thing...

On my '93, the positive terminal is so close to one of the A/C lines that I can't get jumper cables on it without a lot of contortion and a little praying. However, if the battery was grounded either through direct contact or via shorting of one of its heavy cables, the result would be near-instant car death, not a trickle-down lasting all night.

I don't see the original poster reappearing yet, but my bet was that it was due to a wonky alternator either undercharging or overcharging his battery, depending on which component was swapped most recently (I understand he went through something like six). My Bonne is on alternator #4 right now, a genuine Delco rebuild, which has lasted several years now but which is starting to get a little... um... suspicious again.
