Alright here'* my deal. In the process of "restoring" my '87, one of my concerns is the body. Now there is quite a bit of surface rust on the lower parts of the doors. I know there is a way to easily get rid of MOST of this, but i'm not sure where to start. I'm fine with sanding and priming the paint. I'm getting it painted at maaco for like 250 sometime this summer so it won't look bad for long. I've seen this spray stuff that goes on and is supposed to stop the rust, have any of you tried this stuff? Thanks for all the help, i love this club!

Do yourself a favour, if you want to preserve your car and drive it in wet weather. Have it painted. Just do the bottom rocker panel. It will blend and not be noticeable. It won't cost that much.
The sprays are fine, if you redo it every couple of months but is messy and will not clean up well.

if you want to get rid of that surface rust , it must be removed completely. it has to be sandblasred or media blasted. if you cover it up with ANYTHING , it will just come back.if you end up with any holes, the bad metal has to be replaced or it will come back. anything else is just a short term cover up.

A good quality paint job will do exactly what he says.

Any rust at all is like a cancer. You have to get rid of it all or it comes back.

The other trick, if you want to stop it from progressing, is to isolate it from oxygen.
There are 3 things that are required for corrosion to happen.
Oxygen.
An electrolite.....like water or humidity in the air.
Disimilar metals that contact each other via the electrolite and create an electrical potential (anode and cathode)......rust is a disimilar form of metal.

One great product that will Paint Over Rust is POR 15. It will seal it from both oxygen and water........if you don't want to go the sandblasting or welding metal route.

yes por-15 is a good product but i dont believe it is for exterior body surfaces. it is a good product for underbody and chassis work.

Get a wire wheel and buzz all the rust and crap off then hit it with the POR 15

It is wonderful, i've followed a 71 Camaro Resto that used a lot of it. I think even the wheels had it. Maybe it could be used as a primer? I dunno.
