So the headliner in my car is pooched. But i dont like the idea of getting it recovered because the fiberglass is all falling apart and separating. I bought one of those do it yourself headliner kits with the glue and foam backed material, but i dont want to glue it to a damaged backing, so would it be feasable to make a papier mache backing, but use the original headliner as a mold? I was trying to think of materials to make a backing with, but all i could think of was fiberglass resin and sheets. ( verty difficult i think) so could this be a low cost alternative to buying a replacement? please tell me you thoughts and concerns of this project.

Isn't paper mache flower, water and newspaper? I'd be worried that it would stink after a week or so.

You might want to consider getting a headliner from a junk yard and recover that backer if necessary

well im looking for an alternative to the layered fiberglass backing that gm cursed us with. If i use something like wallpaper glue or another type of adhesive then it wouldnt go sour or anything. Ive got 2 headliners, the one in my car, which is sagging and water stained, and another one i took from my parts car, its just the backing with the detiorated foam attached, and a few tears in the edges. But my car has a sunroof and my parts car didnt, so ill have to cut it.

I don't know about your 1990, but 1992+ headliners are very different for sunroof and non-sunroof cars. I agree with randman about getting the correct board from a junkyard and recovering--That'* exactly what i did.
