I did a search to find out what people were using to paint underhood plastic parts. It looks like the concensus is to use a plastic primer/adhesion prep, then regular color paint. A couple questions:

- Any particular type of paint better than another or only automotive paint? Inexpensive Rustoleum OK or not?

- Clear coat afterwards? If so, what type/brand is recommended?

Which parts are you looking to paint?

The engine covers I've seen painted were merely primered and painted. No special paint.

my engine cover, maxifuse relay cover and STB was not primed at all.... just parinted with black/ grey flake rattle can paint


also my grille surround was painted in the same manner with no problems


make sure you CLEAN the parts and let them dry

Not really sure what I'm going to paint, if anything. I just have some ideas/concepts and have seen some pretty nice engine bays here with color schemes. Just storing up ideas and knowledge "in case" one of the concepts becomes a project, lol.

I asked because I wouldn't want to spend a bunch of time prepping and painting to have it peel/flake off or fade in a few months. If any project does happen, I'll surely post for all to see and comment.

Used plastic fusion paint on my engine cover and my relay cover. No primer needed, just clean and paint.

No we didn't do hers, I used primer on Jim'* though.

Oh well. It still looks better than the stock grey

it looks damn good for primer, alsmost as good as mine........... copycat.
