hi i recentley painted my car white and i bought black and grey leather to redo the seats and door panels and i also bought a new black caroet for the floor...

my problem is i have the wood grain dash that covers the radio and steering wheel and has the vents in it. i also have the wood grain door panels on all 4 doors.. and they seem to have a plastic coating thats all peeling and stuff..

my problem is that i dont no if i should paint it or cover it with a fabric or vinyl .?
can anyone tell me what would work better and look better.. ..
paint them or cover them ?

i want it to look nice but also last a lil bit .. paint would scratch and can be repainted but fabric would look better but be harder to change if i had to because it would be glued on.

IMO, I'd save myself the trouble and goto the yard and get replacements. If that isn't feasable, is it a clear coat that is peeling? Or is it the "woodgrain" paint? If clear coat, which I'm kinda doubting, then spray it with lacquer after light 000 sanding. If it is wood paint, try doing whatever paint you think you'd like, after sanding, and cover that with lacquer or spar varnish - spray of course!

I"d do one of two things:
Search the junkyards or start a thread in the Wanted section for a set of woodgrain trim in good condition to keep the OEM look

or

Texture and paint the parts. See the pic below for the finished trim around the shifter:


The trim was formerly the same woodgrain as the dash and seat switch trim. It was cut, fiberglassed, sanded, textured and painted. Although it'* difficult to tell from the pic, the coin holder is original and unpainted and is nearly an exact match to the texture and paint. In person, most people can not tell that the shifter trim is not a GM part. If done properly, the SEM paint products used produce a very hard and durable surface which is not easily scratched ot marked.



For fabric covered trim, I'd worry about the contact cement not holding well... especially around the door lock & handle trim. There'* not a lot of surface in some areas.

on the wood grain door panels, i would cover it, u chance more peeling if u paint over. im planning on redoing my interior as well, it needs to be black and white but everything is a funky green/blue color, ne ideas on changing/paintinmg vinyl?

Vinyl wrapping would look great. The problem I can see is that once wrapped, they might not fit back in properly. Contact cement holds extremely well. You can spray on the glue then use a heat gun and stretch the vinyl all you want and it wont come off. Just give the pieces a quick sanding with 400 grit sandpaper just to guarantee a good contact. Also make sure that you wrap the vinyl around all corners and edges and glue no less than 1/2 an inch around the backside. That will make sure that it doesnt lift up around the edges.

Heres an example. The edges are all pressed in and stretched, just glue holding it.
