I have a 2001 Chevy Impala and this morning it was sputtering and surging going down the highway before it quit. After that it takes a few times of trying to start it for it to fire up again. Then you can go down the road for a short distance before it starts to do the same thing. Will something else cause this code besides the MAF sensor. I hate to pay for a new sensor if it could be something else. Thanks in advance for your help.

Unplug the sensor. Engine will stumble a bit until it learns to run off the tables. If it clears up and runs better, then you will know the MAF is bad.
