New to this page. Don’t know how this works. I’m looking to buy a new used vehicle. I’ve read horror stories about the gm 3.6. If the oil is changed at an interval of 5 to 6000 miles, is there still a possibility of it coming unglued. Thanks for any help.
They had an issue in 2007-2009 where if the oil change interval was regularly too long, it would set an emissions code when the cam phasers couldn't accommodate how far the chains would "stretch" due to wear. I own one that had the chains changed for that issue at ~80,000 miles. The previous owner changed oil well after the reminder would pop up.
They had it another ~30,000 miles and now I have it with almost 220,000 miles. I've used Quaker State 5W-30 full synthetic religiously at ~3,000-mile intervals and it'* still a feisty little monster that is happy every day.
If "coming unglued" refers to the engine coming apart etc., I've barely ever heard of one of these having issues like that, and suspect abuse and/or neglect on the ones that did. It'* a pretty solid engine now that the bugs got worked out.
What year and vehicle and odometer are you looking at?
