First off, a little of my background. I am a student at a local college for Automotive Services. I am also a mechanic apprentice at a local shop. Going on 3rd term and only 3rd week of work.

1996 Chevrolet Blazer 4x4 Automatic Transmission

A friend asked me to install his starter for him after getting stranded at a gas station. So I installed the starter to find that the car still didn't start. I did hot wire the starter off the battery to bench test it and the starter did spin, but the pinion didn't come out. I was able to start the car using a remote stater switch. I wasn't sure which relay was the right one so I tied running a jumper wire from 87 to 30 on all 3 relays and tried cranking the engine with no luck, one relay I know is the blower motor because that turned on. Test light lit on 85 to 86. Also had 12.6V on DVOM as well. He also told me his fuses were good so I didn't check, after I tried jumping the relays I double checked to find the crank fuse blown. I replaced the fuse still no start. I also didn't recheck the relays again since replacing the fuse. But I don't know if I blew the fuse trying to jump the relay. So I am just looking for some steps in what to check next, sounds to me like possible ignition switch.

Another note when I removed the old starter the only wire I removed was the B+ cable to the starter but when I put the remote stater switch on the car there was a 2nd wire that looked like it could go to the starter, but it was broke. Not sure if that goes to starter or not.

I am still working on my diagnostic skills so steps on what to check, how to check and maybe more then just check one thing and report back... Since the car is not in my driveway I cant just run back and forth. Thanks.

I have access to Pro Demand which tells me steps to install starter.

1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Remove brush end mounting bracket (if equipped). Remove starter solenoid terminal "*" nut and battery cable nut. Separating wiring from starter.

So it sounds like that broken wire goes to the starter.

Yes, you should have 2 wires going to the starter. One large one and a small one(purple I believe) that goes to a 10mm nut.

That'* what I thought... but I didn't see the 2nd wire coming off the starter when I removed the old one... was kinda confused... but yet I could not see the wires with the starter in the way either. I just made a fused jumper wire and going to connect to the small wire and to the starter and crank to see if it does anything.
