Issue resolved. Can add a final TIP to my step-by-step.
The end of the cable at column was not pressed on the ball soccet post all the way! I squeezed super hard and you can feel it seat. BUT, it doesnt seat all the way down wthout a lot more force. Used a pair channel locks and it seated all the way down. Rookie mistake.
So it was kind of a $0.01 part/fix! Although I leatrned should it ever break or need repalced its not going to be super easy and none of the trillion bushing kits fit this on-eoff detent style end (all others are some sort of eyelet with a bushing).
