HELP !! Wheel bearing ? half shaft ? noise at 40 mph gearheads needed
Ok 99 Park Ave 200k miles. AT 40 mph you hear a noise that seems to be from the left front wheel kinda like a wap,wap , wap well you get the idea its not a constant growl or squeel more like a slow barking dog,lol
It did seem to worsen on a hard right turn so I assumed left wheel bearing, bought a new one for 60.00 installed, guess what, Yup still there. No ripped boots on the half shafts, no popping sounds etc... Rotors and pads are fine. I tried jacking up that side and putting it in gear but cant duplicate the sound.
So... what could this be...
Shold i keep driving it and see if it gets worse ??
I was going to chg out the other 3 wheel bearings due to mileage but why do that if they are quiet right ???

No vibration in the wheel and the nosie seems gone at higher speeds. Would you chg out all the other wheel bearings as a maintenance thing due to mileage or wait till they go ??
I can try rotation but wouldnt a tire cause vibration ?

chgd the tires no change in the noise. At higher sppeds you dont hear it and if the radio is on you dont hear it. I did find a bad left outer tie rod end though and replaced that....I may just keep driving it until it gets worse IF it gets worse...
It wouldnt be a half shaft right ? Dont they pop and crack ??
It does seem on a hard right turn at low speed you hear it more, you still hear it when going straight but not when hard left or its much quieter....

And btw..When my axle went bad o my 94 it made an eerie whining and humming noise that went away when i turned right(was my front left) and louder when turnin left..the boot could have a samll hole or tear and it may have lost all its grease by now

possible, maybe but I dont want to just start replacing 200.00 parts w/o having a better idea...Usually half shafts make a snapping or popping noise when turning etc, this doesn't...I dont think its a half shaft but I guess it could be

I would lean towards it being an axle...you have eliminated pretty much everything else in the front end...as far as replacing your bearings...I believe in replacing things when needed not just in doing so...
