If your going to do anything with the upper plenum, my suggestion would be to change it all out. Replace the plenum, replace the upper gaskets, upgrade the lower gaskets to the aluminum ones and uprade the coolant elbows to the newer aluminum ones. Then you should be trouble free.
If i was going to go though the work for the upper i would do it all at the same time. I would do the lower with the aluminum gaskets and the aluminum elbow along with the new upper. My way of thinking why do the upper then possible in a month or so have to do the lower and have to tear apart all the stuff you just did.
definitely do the lower too.when i tore mine apart the upper was what i saw but the lower was way worse leaking internally. as far as the elbow, theres only one on your engine and when you take the lower intake manifold off you just slide it out. then pull the other side out of the tensioner, you dont have to mess with anything else like when people are just doing the elbow. then you pick the plastic crap thats left in the holes in the tensioner and intake manifold out. just before you go to put the manifold back on i put some black rtv on the elbow, stuck it in the tensioner angled up, push the intake on it then drop it strait down on to the new gaskets/silicone
