Don mentioned it when he said to test for leak down. Sounds like the seals in the fuel pump are shot...time for a new pump.

That would be the most likely, although anything that could leak the fuel away from the rail is suspect. Leaky FPR, or leaky injectors would give a similar symptom.

wouldn't a leaky FPR or injector have to displace the fuel somewhere to let the pressure down so fast? I don't see any fuel leaking out externally anywhere

Ed has a pump for $75... if it was your $75 would you get it?

Both the FPR and the injector would leak into the intake, but they would usually be at lower rate. Pull the vacuum hose from the FPR and check for gas, or a gas smell. If it'* there replace it, and don't start the car until you do.

You could pull the fuel rail, pressurize it, and check for any leaking injectors.

If I had to make a one choice, out of the 3 without further testing, I'd go with the most likely cause of the fuel pump. I would strongly suggest at least the FPR check, as that can lead to an explosion in the UIM if it is bad.

Isn't there a check valve in the fuel pump or fuel pump outlet whose job it is to maintain pressure in the fuel line/rail when the pump is shut down? If injectors and FPR are not leaking, that would point to the check valve.

But, I am thinking you have to change the pump to get a new check valve.

Yes, I believe that the check valve is part of the fuel pump assembly.

I got the pump installed last night. wow, that trunk acess hole is amazing, entire job was under 30 minutes.

Pump held pressure on initial prime, and car started perfectly.

The real test was this morning after it had been sitting all night.
