Default brake

I have disk brakes in the back wheels. When I brake, it makes a loud scraping sound. When I release the brake and continue driving the scraping goes away (gradually) .
Any ideas as to what the cause of such noise might be? I am pretty sure that I have lots left on the brake pads (not worn). This came on just today.

Thanks.

The noise appears to be coming from rear drivers side tire only.

It looks like the brake disc has scoring around the disk compared to the better side. Also the better side has a slight lip on the outside edge while the noisy side does not have this lip.

IT WOULD BE SURE NICE TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DRIVING AND SEE PICTURES OF WHAT YOU ARE VERBALLY DESCRIBING

IS your vehicle like this in the rear?

Hi,
Driving a 2017 Buick verano. Sorry, I don't have pics right now. It has disc brakes at the back. It has grooves going around the disk plate on 2/3 of the outside portion of the rotor surface to the most outside edge of the rotor all the way to the outside edge so there is no lip at the edge of the rotor as there is on the other wheels.

If I have to replace the rotors, Can I just replace the one on the wheel that has the brake problem or do they have to be replaced in pairs ..If I replace only the damaged, will it cause a noticeable difference in braking. If I am going to keep the car for 120,000 km more , should I buy high quality rotors or would it really matter.

I bet a pad is down to the metal.

Time to replace brake pads and at least one rotor. I'd personally do both rotors while there. Don't cheap out of rotors.

Worst case: You have a brand new set of pads in your hand, you take things apart and discover another problem, you can fix the other problem and take the pads back.

Hello,
I had the rotor replaced and the brake pads replaced. It seemed that the outer pad was completely worn while the inner pad had lots left. Both outer and inner pad on the other rear wheel also had lots of meat on them but replaced them anyways. There is a screecher on the inner pads but not on the outer pads thus I did not get the warning noise when outer pad wore out. I wonder why only the outer pads wore out while the inner was still quite good and why they don't put a warning screecher on the outer pads.
