Default 99 Park Ave won't recognize the key

I had a problem a couple days ago where my car wouldn't start. The DIC display said "Unknown Driver" instead of "Driver 1" when I turned the ignition on, and the dash went dark as though the battery was dead. No starter, no radio, nada.

After fussing about for a while it finally recognized my key again and all was well. Except certain DIC memory items were reset, like trip meter and gas mileage average.

Any body out there give me a clue what to look for?

Thanks

Thanks for the link, but I don't think it needs to relearn anything. I'm trying to figure out why the key wasn't detected - is it the key or some module in the car that'* not communicating.

I sent you the link for more than the relearn process. Which of the keys shown do you have? Do you only have the one key?

Define "wouldn't start"?

And if the dark dash is related to the no start or no turnover condition, I'd say you might have an issue with the battery somewhere.

sounds like a dead or dying battery. after the battery goes dead, all keys are unknown driver. you have to push the memory button on the door to tell the car which key is which. if the car has a good battery, and the relearn dont work, its probably the transponder in your key or the vats system.

this video explains it well.
