Default 95 Regal GS

A friend of mine from another forum just purchased a 1995 Buick Regal GS. He has a concern about his transmission... "I guess it wasn't as big of a build up as I had hoped for.

There are so many things to fix on the car. All little things, mainly. A fuel door is one of them. But more importantly, there is an exposed gear that I saw when doing my oil change. It was very large, much 1.5x the size of a dinner plate. Not sure what it is yet but there were 2 screw holes on the one side. I'm guessin there was guard/shield to it. But it doesn't look like it ever leaked or anything."

Any comments or suggestions?

Thanks.
