Default 9004'* (dual beam) in a 4 lamp 88 Electra?

Hey guys,

We were given my girlfriends, grandfathers 88 Buick Electra (with all of 42k original miles!) with the 3.8 in it. As the gas mileage is significantly better than our other vehicles and far more child friendly (we have a 26 month old and a 1 month old), we have been using the Buick as a daily driver.

I upgraded the lights in my Wrangler to H4 conversions with Silverstars, so when driving the Buick in comparison, the lighting is pretty poor.

I figured I would upgrade the lights to HID'* or SS Ultra'* and just assumed that it used the typical 9005/9006 4 lamp GM setup. I pulled the housings off to double check before I bought them and... They're ALL 9004 dual filament bulbs, as in 4 of them! On the low beams, only the low beam filament ever lights and on the high beam, only the high beam filaments light. So, at this point I assumed that someone along the lines put the wrong bulbs in, but there is no way you could put a 9005/9006 in a 9004 spot, the connector is completely different as is the mounting tabs. Sylvania, PepBoys and Advance Auto all confirm my findings.

It obviously works, but seems really odd. Anyone have any insight as to why this might have been done?
