Default 2002 Rendezvous AWD. Only shifts if I use the gear shift

I have a 2002 Buick rendezvous all-wheel drive. It only shifts if I use the gear shift. I have been told that it is the forward sprag inside the transmission. What transmission years can I use? Also, if I want to replace just the Sprag/drum, can I use something else

Default 2002 rendezvous AWD.. trans compatibility

2 questions
1. What transmissions are compatible for an all-wheel drive transmission from a 2002 rendezvous?

2. If I wanted to just take out the forward sprag, or drum, what transmission could I use then for that same 2002 all wheel drive rendezvous?

Are you prepared to tear it down? If not let the shop handle it.

How many miles on it?

How many miles have you owned it?

Who told you this?

How much experience does this source have with 4T6X transaxles?

For parts? . . . or as a whole donor transmission?

It'* not just the year that is important. It is several other things, most importantly the final drive ratio. Your best bet is to get one from the same exact year/make/model.

So you have a 20 year old 4T6x transaxle that has problems, the required fix is an unconfirmed diagnosis, and you want to pull a used part out of another transaxle that will be between 11 and 32 years old to fix it???

Have you taken into account that once you get this deep into the transmission you'll pretty much need a rebuild kit to get it back together?

Are you experienced with disassembly of automatic transmissions at all?

From your questions, I get the feeling that you are under the impression that replacing a sprag assembly is something like replacing an upper intake manifold, blower motor, or fan clutch. It is actually about 10,000% more difficult than that. Please don't take any offence, we just don't tend to blindly let folks stumble into a mess like this without asking cautious questions. If I'm way off base let me know. In the meantime:

Has anyone checked the connector?

What is the fluid level?

What diagnostics have been performed on it?

Is the VSS working?

Are all four ratios available through manual shifting?

Are any codes stored in the PCM?

--- no, didnt know that,

--- only the solenoids... and have had little luck with the repairs lasting long

Is the VSS working?
---- seems to be, since the MPH reads what the vehicle is going
Are all four ratios available through manual shifting?
---- i would expect not, but need to check

Are any codes stored in the PCM?
---- some related to pressure sense in the trans, they dont come up all the time.. i; have to recheck

Thx for the info tho. il get back to u when i get the wheel speed sensors all working

so i read codes
P0180 - TFP switch
po758 - shift solenoid B

i plan to drop the trans pan, and change filter and fluid. I also may change solenoid B. Is there anything else i should look into?

I'd change both shift solenoids while you're there.

Fun thing is: On a 4T6x the solenoids are in the side pan. You'll probably have to drop the transaxle and/or subframe to get to them.

We're probably super curious what the bottom of the pan looks like on this.

Also, how many miles on this car?

How many miles have you owned it?

The awd 4t65e is a piece of dog crap and maybe its possible to be good aftermarket fixing, but id suspect its like the paddle shifting 4t65e that went behind a 5.3

Junk and just doesnt work right. the shared parts are lot fewer than youd think compared to the fwd units. The car maybe would be better t oconvert to fwd?
