I've been down this road before.
Honestly the best place to start is by having an A/C shop test the system (hi/low side) to be within spec, otherwise compressor may not run.
It may just be low on refrigerant? / then indicating a potential leak somewhere, That'* when dye should be added to help find the leak.

In my case my system was in spec, yet compressor would not run.
It turned out to be a wiring issue in the clutch pigtail & I replaced it with a new pigtail that had a necessary required diode built in.
An A/C Shop had the correct pigtail in stock.

Even though I do not have the specific 01 Lesabre schematic our cars share a similar system.
Possibly one of our members could find an all data one for you.

Ya AllData is a reasonable place to be, when you got a lot of stuff to see!

The other option is to find a set of factory manuals from fleabay.
Gosh I think my Pk Ave used books were $140

Since it is winter in many regions now,..
I want to mention that when the ambient air temp sensor reads anything below 38F (some say 39F) The A/C will not engage no matter what you do.
The compressor/dryer will only engage again once it warms above 39F again. I believe this was enabled to protect the system from completely freezing up/higher pressures.
