Default 1962 Buick Invicta - dont know why this happened

New to the classic car game. Have a 1962 Buick Invicta 401/445 Wildcat Nailhead. Purchased car from CT. I went up to CT saw the car and drove it. He did me a solid and drove it down to NY. Smelled gas and the fuel filter was leaking. Took it off and cleaned the rubber gasket. I was very careful not to drop the glass bowl. Than I look down on the floor and see this very thin gasket that seems to go on the center of the filter?? Maybe, dont really know. I only saw the main rubber gasket that goes on the housing between it and the glass filter. Is there a second smaller gasket? Maybe it was stuck up under the housing and fell after I took the filter off but I didnt see it. So I clean the glass, put the filter back, fill the filter back up 80/85 % with gas and replace. No leaks Great. Now the car runs like crap. Why? It races it knocks. It wont idle down. Did I some how trap air in the line. Can I bleed the system a little? What did I do wrong? It is a far cry from the way she pulled up in my driveway. This is only day 2. Here we go

Thanks for your help.

Is it possible to run without the filter element in the bowl?

I believe that the small gasket does go on the center of the filter.

Is your bowl filling w/fuel??
