Where is this? Mankato area is 89 and 87 are priced the same at every station.

Default Re Type of Gas and Owners Manual

Hello all,

I am new here and I just bought a GXP and have had it for about three weeks, and really happy with it. (replaced a 97 buick that died from the dreaded intake manifold problem)

My question relates to what octane gas to use, because GM Canada website says high octane (91), but my owners manual makes no metion of the Northstar engine and what type of gas should be used. Only the 3800 is discused in the owners manual.

I have called GM and they say there is no other owners manual, so for Pontiac Dad, I would be curious to know the part number of the manual that you obtained your info from so I can ask GM to supply the correct owners manual.
Found this site from doing a search on the correct owners manual for this car. Lots of neat and interesting info here.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Default 87 can be used

I run 87 in mine and there are absolutely no problems. No pinging, idling problems and performance is still pretty solid. GM Canada website says 87 can be used as well as the manual. Enjoy your car.

5.3 Avalanche, thanks for replying.
I have been running 87 ocatane and have expierenced no problems either.

Does your owners manual specificqlly refer to the 4.6 L Northstar engine? The reason I ask is that my owners manual makes no mention of this engine.

Would you mind posting the part number of your owners manual if does mention the 4.6 L engine

Thank you for your assistance
