Can't fault GM for not seeing the future . It wasn't as if GM KNEW that 240 hp wasn't going to be enough after 2003. After Nissan put the 240 hp v6 in their Altima, it set off a horsepower war in the midsize sedan area. Suddenly after 2003 EVERY midsize carmaker realized that 200 hp wasn't gonna cut it anymore. And the Supercharged Series II that defined high horsepower during the 90'* was now just an ordinary engine. With that , and Chrysler'* brand-new 300C Hemi in 2004 , GM was stuck with a front-drive sports sedan in a rear-drive marketplace. 
So any talk about the GXP somehow being weak against the Hemi is B.*., considering the Hemi didn't exist in 2000.
Neither did Chrysler'* performance, for that matter.

Hmm..for years pontiac has had to add a supercharger to a big displacement engine to mach what a naturally aspirated 3.2 or 3.5 could do. Now they have no choice but dump that enging in favor of a v8 as they still dont have an engine to compare. Now since most japanese v6 engines put out more power who knows what gm will do. All GM has is big displacement gass guzzler engines even that 4.2 275 hp v6 they brag about. Hey GM come out with a 3.2 liter that puts out 280 hp without a turbo or supercharger oh wait..honda has one and it puts out 300 hp.

Hey, horsepower isn't everything. The Acura TL, RL and others are beefing up the hp numbers, but off the line they still get smoked. The difference is how many gears you have and whether you have a manual or automatic or even auto w/manual shift mode. Thats where GM needs to up the Pontiac line. Give us a 5 or 6 spd auto/manual and its over for the Nissan'* and Acura'*. Thats the secret Infiniti has realize. Also, weight can be an issue depending on the competition segment.

I had a 200 TL with the 225hp 3.2 engine and it would smoke the GXP off the line. The GXP has a way better ride though and is smoother. 5 Speed auto helps but we are still talking about Old gm technology. Hooking a 5 speed auto to the 3.8 wont make much performance difference

Lets look at the facts. The variable valve timing and cam inductions, as well as other known ways of making a 3.0 liter perform like 4.0 liter, all come from one source-racing! Honda, Toyota, Audi, Even Ford through Cosworth have participated in racing serieses that REQUIRED ,because of displacement limits, tricks and ways of tuning engines without increasing displacement. That'* why Honda has a 4-cylinder that makes the same amount of power as GM'* brand-new 3.8L "high feature" engine.
That said, do bear in mind that the advantage of GM engines versus import powertrains is that there is more torque when you need it. Chances are that the 225 horsepower in the Acura isn't any good until you get on the tach. The GXP has its 300 pd/ft at a nice, low tach level. Just say that about an S2000

New STS has The variable valve timing and it added 20 hp to the engine. So that dohc 32 valve v8 puts out 20 hp more than a honda 3.2 sohc v6. Look I am not a pro honda Japanese fan but just saying GM needs to replave these aging engines with so good low litre engines as gas prices keep rising. Btw my tls 3.2 would spin the tires down the block. My GXP has way smoother power at high speed and much better high speed punch.
