True or False on power caps? - GM Forum - Buick, Cadillac, Chev, Olds, GMC & Pontiac chat

Audio (and aftermarket electronics) This is your place for alarms, remote starters, to brag about your system, exaggerate your db levels, or simply ask questions for stock or aftermarket audio. No Flames! (except from roasted amps)

I don't know if they help/protect your battery.... but they sure do improve your sound, and the drain on the battery. I suppose, thinking about it, that they can't HURT your battery, and preventing the drain is probably a good thing.

Yeah it doesnt protect your battery persay but... it does help it from going into a very low charge which can be damaging to a battery..

If your battery drains without a cap it is still going to drain with a cap. So in other words beef up the alt. before anything and youll be fine.

All a cap does is smooth out the loads a battery sees. You don't get the giant peaks from low notes, as they take power from the cap.

0 gauges mains, and stronger alts are the real fixes. A Red top alone is not.

Also if you go anything bigger than a 4 gauge it would be smart to also upgrade the power line going from the alt. to the battery.
