I can only remember the radio saying Perforamcne sound on the side , not bose. 97 was when pontiac started using bose speakers. There isnt a bose radio. Just the 5 1/4, 6x9 and tweeters.

I work with a few audiophiles, and never fail to impress them. If you can replace your stock speakers, the system is capable of great sound. Consider an RF modulated CD changer. I did this, and am quite pleased with it. Sound quality is fantastic, and I retained my cassette so that I can use my MP3 player through it if I choose.

check out www.ikesound.com and check out their Infinity 5.25" and 6x9 inch speakers. You wouldn't be dissapointed with them.

Ikesound has INCREDIBLE prices, however their descriptions can sometimes be lacking detailed info. My suggestion is go to Crutchfield [.com], and find the stuff you want, then go to Ikesound for a great deal.

So .. from what I'm gathering here is that I can install new speakers and leave the stock HU in. My back speakers have 4 wires. Two to the 6x9 ( ? ) and two to the tweeters.
4 ohm speakers will work. The wiring adapters will work for the front but not he back.

Is that about right ?

Wiring adapters should work for both the front and the back...the front use only two wires, but the harness can accomodate up to 4 pins.

If you're not sure if you want an aftermarket head unit, replace the speakers. You can always switch out the HU if you don't like it sounds. To be safe, in case you want to keep the HU, choose some speakers that have a very high sensitivity, 93db recommended. That way you can make the best of your stock HU'* power.

Recommendations:

6x9'*: Pioneer TS-A6960R, TS-A6970R, both 3-ways. If you want, step up to the TS-A6980R (4-way) or TS-A6990R (5-way). They're listed in order of expense, all of which have excellent sound and will mesh with your current system very, very well.

5.25"ers: Pioneer TS-A1370R. I'd recommend 3-way speakers, as they tend to sound better.

how to wire the 4 wires in the back ? I realize they are two different speakers.
I suppose the crossover is someplace else. How do I get one set of wires to handle both the highs and the lows ?

For the rear speakers, one pair is full range, one pair is bass only. Hook the new 6x9s up to the fullrange pair. Im sure someone here has the wiring colours. Just tape off the other two. You wont really miss the Gain. It was only for exaggerated bass at low levels. Dont worry about the tweeters, they are connected to the fullrange wires inside and have their own seperate crossover. You might want to disconnect them entirely because they may interfere with the 6x9 tweets. Good luck!

If I don't foget today, I'll look at the wire color schemes in my car. Otherwise, I just used trial and error when I hooked my speakers up!
