Stock Amp

Well, it seems that the stock amp on my 2000 ssei has blown. I have looked around several places to see what my best replacement options are and I came up with...

1) Amp #1 will be for the speakers inside

2) Amp #2 will be for a 10'' sub

3) Add a crossover

Now, I have an aftermarket radio as well as aftermarket speakers/tweeters. I don't want anything bigger then one 10" because I am not really into the heavy bass anymore. Do I need to get this kind of setup or is there a way to just replace the stock amp with an aftermarket one?

raptor will chime in he is the audio guru round here.
i would have to think if you are going aftermarket on a amp you would have to run new wireing and just bypass the factory stuff also if your not into bass and only running a 10in sub you could always go with a 5 channel

MouSe 03-31-2011 04:29 AM

How many pre-outs does your HU have on it? It will require a minimum of two to be able to run two amps. It's recommended to have three though so you can keep your "fade" capability.

I know the basics on setting up an aftermarket stereo, the thing is am I going in the right direction or do I need a different setup.....

MouSe 03-31-2011 04:32 AM

I have the setup you have. One amp for my internal speakers and one for my sub. I know 5 channels are an option but I liked the idea of having a sub on separate power. Also, what was said earlier is right, you'll have to bypass the stock amp to make it all work.

jwfirebird 03-31-2011 06:31 AM

yep you'll have to bypass the amp to make the cars stock wiring work, but when i did mine i figured i had to tear the car all apart to run the other wires and the stock ones are kinda small so i ran new speaker wire to all the speakers right from the amp. my hu has three sets of preouts so i didnt fool with the stock amp wiring just bypassed it all together. they do have premade bypass harnesses for some cars if you want to go that way.

i went with two amps too like mouse said, and its hard to find exactly what you want unless you want to really pay for it. and say you want to change to a different sub or whatever your locked in because you dont want to have to pay all that money again

When I was running two amps I just ran power/ground/switched to my radio, and didn't bother hooking up the speaker wire, just ran the RCA's. No need for bypass harnesses that way.

I think two amps would look killer in the right setup, but for those that actually USE their trunk a 5-channel would more than suffice.

two amps dont take up that much room

But they may take up more room than he wants to lose.

I don't think 2 12's and 2 amps take up that much room but others would beg to differ.

How do you know how much he wants to lose?

white4d96 03-31-2011 12:21 PM

Never said I did, just saying it could.

Not to mention it depends on the amp(s) he chooses as well, and how he mounts them.

Although, if he used 2 amps and a small sub, he could maybe build an amp rack that double-stacks the amps (leaving breathing room of course) and then has the enclosure on the top, then it would take up less room. Maybe, just a thought.

MouSe 03-31-2011 04:19 PM

I mounted mine to the underside of the rear deck. You don't notice the amps at all when mounted there.

airlife9 04-01-2011 12:13 AM

I was going to remove the stock amp and then mount the 2 amps there but with a good distance apart from one another.

A small 10" would be enough I don't really want to take up to much trunk space.. Appearance is a big thing for me I am not going to just throw this and that everywhere. I know a nice setup is going to cost money but I am also looking to spend a 1k. My range is between 400-700

jwfirebird 04-01-2011 08:39 AM

you should be able to get a decent setup for that. i saw in the crutchfield ad rockford has these full power amps that are very small. i dont know anything other than that but the guy was holding it in is hand and it was small enough you could fit it behind or under the radio in the center console cavity, or under the deck with alot more room left over.

MouSe 04-01-2011 09:26 AM

Not looking to spend a grand? Wow. I spent that on just HU, speakers, 4-channel amp, wiring, and install. Then I had to buy a new HU, another amp, sub, and a box. Hope you find some good deals.

jwfirebird 04-01-2011 09:35 AM

he said he had the hu and speakers already so all he needs is the amps and sub. and the wiring can be a significant chunk too. as far as the box though, the people on here convinced me to build my own box to the sub specs and kind of music you listen to. 100 percent difference from the qlogic band pass i was using. its less money to build but it is alot of work, but to me its worth it.

MouSe 04-01-2011 09:53 AM

I had my box custom built, since I and no friends at the time had tools to make a box. I've never had a pre-fabbed box. That's just dumb.

jwfirebird 04-01-2011 10:36 AM

well i was uneducated and got it for free with some other stuff i wanted

MouSe 04-01-2011 11:24 AM

I wouldn't say I was "educated" it's just that the guy who built my systems for me doesn't do pre-fabbed. He builds everything from scratch everytime.

white4d96 04-01-2011 12:28 PM

If you shop around online you should be able to get a great setup for 1k.

I have always been impressed with sonicelectronix.com 's service. I have also heard good things about Audio Savings, although I haven't personally dealt with them before.

Be careful with mounting amps to the rear deck though, some amps don't like being upside down.

My opinion? I think it would be cool as heck to make a false floor hiding the amps, and flush the sub in a spare tire well enclosure. That would, of course, mean you would lose your spare though. I'm not familiar with Bonne's, but maybe you could make an enclosure using some of the dead space around the wheel wells, if there is any? That could be cool as well, almost look like stock if done right.
