Does anyone have a reverse mount on a subwoofer... that is to say, a subwoofer mounted backwards in a flush-cut panel (with the magnet facing into the trunk and the voice coil aiming into the cabin)?

I was thinking about this because the 15" sub that I have is much too big and takes up too much space in its current box... but if I use the flush-reverse mount, it would leave me with more cargo room. Has anyone done this? If so, what were the precautions you took?

So you want to mount the sub with the magnet coming out the pass thru? and you already ahve the Sub?? what are its reccommeded enclosure specs? the box that you have to build may just be as big as if you mounted the sub the normal way

I have the sub. The box I have it in now is freaking huge and bumps against a part of the frame, so it can't sit all the way back and juts out ridiculously far into the cargo space. I want the finished product to basically look like harofreak'*. I need cargo space for moving ***** around from school to home and back again.

My questions are:

1) Since the traditional box takes up too much room, is it a viable option to reverse-mount the thing with a smaller box that can fit under the top frame bracing under the package deck?

2) Does the sub need airspace in front as well as behind? It'* 800W pushing a single 15.

3) How much space would I need in front, were I to mount mine like harofreak?

You know mounting subs inverted is really only for looks. You're not saving any space since what you took "out of the box" is now jutting out into your trunk, it'* magnetic as hell, and you could damage the woofer if you're hauling around a bunch of stuff in your trunk.

Go out and take some measurement of your trunk - maximum width between the wheel wells, maximum height under the frame bracing, maximum depth you think you want the box to stick out, and the angle of the back seat so it'll sit nice and flush with no wasted space. I wouldn't think mounting a 15 vertical in the trunk would give you clearance problems, but you can always angle the front panel to fit if needed.

Then, get some basic info on your woofer. If you don't have the original material, go online and look for a spec sheet. There'* no sense in building a new box if it'* just going to sound like something farted in your trunk.

It'll even give you a template sheet for cutting your wood. It'* pimp. I came across this site one day and spent 6 hours reading all the topics - it is everything you ever wanted to know about car stereo...

Anyway, unless you have a beast of a 15 that takes mucho cubic feet to run right, you'll be able to build a simple box that fits in your trunk the way you want it to, you won't have to have your woofer sticking it'* butt out at everyone (unless it'* all chromed out and pretty like harofreak'* and you want to show it off). It'll sound great to boot.

Do what he said, and reverse mounting it is prett much the same as mounting it normally, both require the same ammount of box space, except maybe mounting it reversely will allow you to build a box that is a little smaller because the sub isnt in there taking up space
