Default Remote start

Did the 98 Bonneville have a remote starter option? Or did a previous owner have the one on my car installed?
I can't find any info on this anywhere.

The remote is different than the factory remote. It'* all black, rectangular, and has only 3 buttons:

Lock - Trunk
Start

I'm using a replacement factory remote right now, so I don't know the brand name on it or the FCC ID. I can scan it and post a pic later if helpful.

I'd say aftermarket. I haven't heard of a stock remote starter.

Okay, figures. Any advice on how to tell what brand so I can try and reprogram that remote?

I'd suggest pulling the underdash cover off on the driver'* side and look for spliced-in wiring harnesses, relay banks, obviously non-stock mounted boxes, etc--chances are that'* where it'll be located at, since all the wiring is easily accessible in the vicinity of the steering column (at least it was on my 96)

If you see a name like Viper, Avital/Avistart, Clifford, Valet--you can go to the DEI website and get manuals for most of their systems www.directed.com

If it says "Bulldog" on it--I'd rip it out and throw it away--I've seen at least 5 of those cheap *** systems fail--the quality just aint there.

I've installed Avistart systems in both of my Pontiacs--been quite happy with them--the one in my GP has been there for almost 2 years, never had a single problem with it.

HTH,
Jim

:P Thanks. This thread has also given me a clue as to what the little black box with a tail (wire antennae) that'* stuck to the inside of my windshield might be.

Hopefully I can track this stuff down. Remote start sure is nice during the Minnesota winter (ought to be here any time, it'* been warm for a month now!!)

lol, that'* what we have in our car... it works, never failed... dirt cheap, so I guess you get what you pay for

As with Crazydriver, our Toyota has an Astrostart... great stuff, and the remote is shaped like a lemon... and makes neat noises
