Radar detectors are worthless if you don't adapt your driving style. It'* 50% detector, 50% you driving SMART as dictated by the way the detector works, your environment, and the cars around you.

I also vote for Bel. The i955 is a good choice for a mid-priced detector

I have the Bel940 in the front of the Zilla, some uniden in the back. Front of the SLE is a whistler, and a cobra in the rear.
Known radar sources (shopping mall) typically warn me a block or two sooner with the Bel than the Whistler, depending on what I'm driving that day.
Yes, even a cheap radar detector mounted in the rear will alarm before the best-quality detector with 360 protection mounted in the front. You can also 'hear' as the source moves from front to rear or rear to front. You know what DIRECTION the threat originates. This is why I have two detectors in each car.
Good up front, mid-cheap in the rear. I have remote switches on the console for each of them in each car. No fiddling with little buttons for me. Besides, I can't reach the rear, but I can see it in my rear view mirror.

Just my opinion, I have a Valentine 1 and I've found it to be incredibly accurate. Also, once you buy one, you'll never buy another due to obsolescence. Valentine has an upgrade program. If it can be upgraded to the latest technology, they'll upgrade your unit and send it back to you. If the new technology does not fit in the current case and requires a new case, they'll upgrade your old unit by taking it back and sending you the new unit.
I bought mine on ebay, used. I made sure the serial number was intact and verified the upgrade price. I got a deal on the "old" unit cheap, and sent it in for the upgrade. I got back a brand new unit for less than the new units cost at the time. I've since only needed to upgrade once. Turnaround time on upgrades is fast.
