PDA Mounting? - Page 2 - GM Forum - Buick, Cadillac, Chev, Olds, GMC & Pontiac chat

Audio (and aftermarket electronics) This is your place for alarms, remote starters, to brag about your system, exaggerate your db levels, or simply ask questions for stock or aftermarket audio. No Flames! (except from roasted amps)

2 things:

1: That mount is kickass! Only $36 bucks, although I'm sure one could make something for cheaper.

2: Pocket PCs/Palms can be turned into GPS?!?!

YEAH BOY.....i have Microsoft Streets and Trips, and I installed pocket streets on my jornada pocket pc......it won't give any routing directions, but it will show what road i'm on and where, and i can mark where certain things are at........if i wanted to buy more software, i could get some that includes routing directions...

the serial cable from the gps will connect to a serial sync cable for the jornada, and i will have to connect it special, pin 3 from the gps to pin 2 on the pocketpc, pin 2 from the gps to pin 3 on the pda, and pin 5 to pin 5.........and it'll work

OH you need a seperate GPS unit, and the Palm just augments it? I thought there was hardware that could turn a Palm into GPs or something :(

there is, i'm just takin this route, cuz it'* cheaper, and i'm using parts i already have

the hardware that you can use to turn your pda or pocketpc into a gps is a compact flash gps card, that is if ur pocketpc has a compact flash card

one of the more expensive brands

u can also use a separate bluetooth gps unit if the pocketpc has bluetooth

I have a Palm Tungsten E2, it uses SD, but that'* not the same as compact flash is it?

It also has bluetooth, how much (on average) would the GPS part cost?

your best bet is to look on ebay, and start from there

there are gps solutions for sd card slots, and sd and compact flash arent the same...the bluetooth gps units can be anywhere from 30 dollars to 200 dollars....it just depends how you buy it, you can buy it from ebay and get a good deal, or buy from a store and get ripped off.....

you should head over to ebay and search for
"sd gps" or "bluetooth gps"

and maybe get some model numbers, and head over to froogle.com and see what the retail prices are from some stores

I also have Streets & Trips. It comes in two packages, one with the GPS device, one without. The Microsoft device is made by Pharos: www.pharosgps.com/MobileNav/

If you have a Pocket PC with bluetooth, you can get a module that you plug the GPS receiver into. The PPC is nice because it has many functions besides the map software, unlike a dedicated GPS. The Pocket version may not have the audible prompting, but if you can read a map, you may not need that. It will display a red arrow in the center, which moves accross the map as you drive. Or maybe more accurately, the map moves under the arrow.

If you have a laptop, you can use that with Streets & Trips and it will give the voice prompted directions. It also has a night mode which changes to a green and black display.

I've also tried NavMan software. www.navman.com It had the turn-by-turn directions. But It was a little more complicated to use, and at the time, less accurate.

There'* also an SDIO card format GPS receiver on the market, if you have an SDIO slot on your PDA. It won't work in a standard SD slot though. My experience with the receivers that fit in the SDIO, CF or attach as a sleeve is that you need a windshield mount. The PDA has to be up by the front window so it can see the satellites. That'* why I prefer the bluetooth module. Place it by the window and mount the PDA wherever is best. Hope this helps.
